Cross-Training for Artists: Singing for Dancers

One of the biggest advantages of our HUBPRO Full Time Course is the fortnightly singing lessons included in your fees. While singing is not a requirement for all professional dancers, having singing skills can offer several advantages and opportunities within the performing arts industry. Here are some reasons why it can be important for professional dancers to know how to sing:

  • Expanded casting opportunities: Professional dancers who can sing have a wider range of casting possibilities. Many musical theatre productions, for instance, require performers who can both dance and sing. This even spans across Cruise Ships, Showgirl and casino work. By possessing both skills, dancers increase their chances of being cast in a broader array of productions and roles.

  • Versatility in auditions: Knowing how to sing allows dancers to showcase their versatility in auditions. They can audition for roles that require singing and dancing simultaneously, giving them a competitive edge over dancers who possess only one of these skills.

  • Enhanced employability: In the competitive world of performing arts, versatility is highly valued. Dancers who can sing become more employable as they can be considered for a wider variety of projects, including musicals, commercial work, and live performances that require a combination of dance and vocals.

  • Collaboration opportunities: Professional dancers who can sing can collaborate with other artists, such as singers, musicians, and composers. This opens doors to interdisciplinary projects and allows for more creative collaborations, expanding artistic horizons and potential career opportunities. Maybe this is your niche!

  • Professional development and growth: Learning how to sing provides professional dancers with an additional avenue for artistic growth. It broadens their artistic capabilities, deepens their understanding of music and rhythm, and enhances their overall performance skills.

It's important to note that while singing skills can be advantageous for professional dancers, they are not mandatory in all dance careers. The specific requirements and expectations may vary depending on the genre, style, and performance opportunities pursued by the dancer.
